Oil Theft: We’ve Arrested Some Highly Placed Individuals-Mele Kyari

Group Managing Director, GMD, Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC, Mele Kyari, has revealed that over one hundred individuals, including some highly placed, have been arrested for their involvement in petroleum product theft.
Kyari made the disclosure in Abuja on Tuesday while making a submission at the ministerial briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team, State House.
According to the GMD, 122 individuals were arrested between April and August with some of them already in the custody of the Econonic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for further action.

Our investigations showed oil theft compromises cut across board, there are NNPC workers, oil companies’ staff and security agencies involved in crude oil theft,” he said.

The NNPC boss noted that crude oil theft is real and happening, insisting that the company’s efforts were also paying off, as according to him, the company has, thus far, unearted 295 illegal connections within 200 meters on just one line alone.
NNPC, Kyari said, was able to intervene in stemming the oil theft tide with the help of the security agencies acting on the directives of the Chief of Defence Staff.

Following the intervention, the company, he said, discovered 739 ovens, some of which have been destroyed, 355 cooking pots, created 344 reservoirs, stressing that the level of the illegal business was enormous.

Giving further insight, Kyari revealed that the company’s security network impounded 30 speed boats, 179 Wooden Boats and 37 trucks, pointing out that a decision has already been taken not only to arrest such confiscated products but also burn them.
