Dos Santos Dies in Spain

Former Angolan President, Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, has died. Santos who ruled the southern African, Portuguese speaking country, passed on Friday at a Barcelona hospital, Spain, after reportedly suffering cardiac arrest.

With great pain and consternation, the government presents its deepest feelings of sorrow to the bereaved family,” a government read in part.

the statement read, describing the former leader as a “statesman of great historical stature” who led the country through very difficult times.

Santos, 79, ruled Angola with iron fist for almost four decades but stepped down in 2017 after 38 years as president. On June 23, 2022, he suffered a cardiac arrest and was subsequently hospitalised in Spain and placed in intensive care.

Meanwhile, President Joao Lourenco, has declared five days of national mourning for his former boss, beginning on Saturday, with a government commission already put in place to organise funerals. He has also ordered flags to be flown at half mast, with all shows and political demonstrations canceled.
