Russia Invades Ukraine

RUSSIA , early Thursday morning, launched the much-expected offensive against Ukraine.

Reuter reports say Russian forces launched the invasion into Ukraine with strikes on it eastern neighbour’s defences, firing missiles at several cities in Ukraine and also landing troops on its coast following President Vladimir Putin’s go-ahead order. Putin reportedly described the action on state television as ‘a military operation in the east.

I have made the decision of a military operation,” Putin said in a surprise television announcement in Moscow, urging Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their arms, as according to him, he wanted a “demilitarisation” of the former Soviet state but not its occupation.

Ukraine acknowledged the attack with Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, stating the facts in a twit. According to him,

Putin has just launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Peaceful Ukrainian cities are under strikes.

“This is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and will win. The world can and must stop Putin. The time to act is now
.” Kuleba wrote on Twitter.

The Russian attack came after Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, made an emotional late-night in which he appealled to Russians not to support a “major war in Europe”.

Zelensky who spoke Russian, said that the people of Russia are being lied to about Ukraine and that the possibility of war also “depends on you”.

Who can stop the war? People. These people are among you, I am sure,” said Zelensky who added that he had tried to call Putin but met “no answer“, only silence”, from the other end, dding that Moscow now had by then, around 200,000 soldiers near Ukraine’s borders.

Shortly after Putin’s announcement, gunfire were heard near the capital’s main airport with sirens barring over the city.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden, has reacted to the eastern European nation’s invasion he rightly predicted for weeks, saying that his prayers were with the people of Ukraine “as they suffer an unprovoked and unjustified attack”. He also promised to imppse tougher sanctions in response.

“I will be meeting with the leaders of the G7, and the United States and our allies and partners will be imposing severe sanctions on Russia,” Biden said in a statement.

The Standoff between Ukraine and Russia emanated from Kremlin’s demand that its neighbour pull out of its North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO, which Putin describes as unacceptable adding that he authorised military action after Russia had been left with no choice but to defend itself against threats from modern Ukraine.

Russia cannot feel safe, develop, and exist with a constant threat emanating from the territory of modern Ukraine,” Putin said. “All responsibility for bloodshed will be on the conscience of the ruling regime in Ukraine.”

A few hours after Putin gave gave his invade-Ukraine order, Russia’s defence ministry disclosed that it had neutralized military infrastructure at Ukrainian air bases and also degraded its air Defence.

Ukrainian media also reported that military command centres in Kyiv and the city of Kharkiv in the northeast had been struck by missiles, with Russian troops confirmed to have landed in the southern port cities of Odessa and Mariupol.
