FORMER Cameroonian defender, Rigobert Song, may be in line to become the head coach if information emanating from the country’s football house is anything to go by.
He is favored to be appointed by Samuel Eto’o and the Cameronian Football Association as a replacement for out of favour coach Antonio Conceiçao, whose removal became a fait acompli following the team’s ouster from the recently concluded Cup of Nations, AFCON, hosted by the country.
Eto’o, according to Jeune Afrique, a local newspaper, is likely to name Song, his former teammates, as successor to Conceição.
Coach Conceiçao faces the Hanmer after failing to lead the Lions to victory in the continental football fiesta. The Pharaoh of Egypt sent the Lion packing from the competition at the semi final stage.
Though the team came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Burkina Faso to the bronze, it was not enough consolation for the round leather-loving country.
Indications are rife that an announcement over the fate of Conceiçao following a letter Eto’o transmitted to members of the Cameronian Football Association on Friday.
In the letter, the former Barcelona star asked committee members to give him additional time to decide, promising instead Wednesday, February 23, 2022, as the new date for the announcement.
Song, now 45, is one of the country’s greatest football players. He was a major part of the country’s team that participated in the conquest of two victorious AFCON between 2000 and 2002.
Song led the selection team that came up with the country’s Olympic Team just as he was the U-23 national team.
