Ernest Shonekan: Ex-Head Of Interim Government Passes On at 85

Head of the first ever Interim National Government in Nigeria, Chief Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan, GCFR, has passed on.

Shonekan, whose short-lived interim administration, assumed office on August 26, 1993, was booted out, barely three months later, by the late General Sani Abacha-led putsch, on November 17.

A former chairman of UAC who doubled as the company’s first Nigerian Chief Executive Officer, CEO, Shonekan died in an unnamed Lagos hospital, and of an unequally unnamed ailment, Tuesday morning.

He was born in Abeokuta, on May 9, 1936.
