*Stops Challenger Hosea Burton in 7th Round
IT was another crowning night for another British boxer with Nigerian blood running through his veins as Damiloa (Dan) Azeez dispatched challenger Hosea Burton to become the new British light-heavyweight champion at The SSE Wembley Arena, London, Saturday night.
Azeez who fought on the Richard Riakporhe vs Olanrewaju Durodola undercard, finished off Burton in a blastering encounter that ended in the seventh round.
From the sound of the opening bell in round one, Azeez left no one in doubt about his intention to lift the belt.
Relentless in aggression, he dominated the encounter and had Burton trapped in a corner after unleashing brutal barrage of punches that required the intervention of the referee. It was one intervention that saved the challenger in the opening round.
But Azeez’s fiery opening round was just an eye opener as he continued pilling hammer blows on his near hapless opponent. For instance, he threw a deft looping right punch that left Burton wobbling in the second round, with a bloodied nose to the bargain.
Yet, swift landings of more right hands punches in the same round gave Burton more worries.
And Azeez compounded his opponent’s woes in the third round with a well delivered thudding hook that gave early indications of a ruined night for Burton.
With his strength and power still unhinged, Azeez took effective control of the fight, dishing precision shots, firm and swarming attacks with stiff hooks that left Burton staggering in the fifth round.
The sixth round was no less ferocious as Azeez unleashed smoldering attacks that left Burton with blood-smeared face. The round ended with Burton slumped onto the ropes after receiving a leaping punch from Azeez in the sixth round.
It was no surprise Burton gave up in the seventh round, unable to stand the torture any more.
