As Fans Hail His N250m Donation to Orphanages
IT is not clear what his initial plans are-mere pranks or another bit of the hussle, for real. What was certain is that at least, Davido, one of Nigeria’s most popular modern music icons, is not known for going with plates for alms. However, when he dropped his Wema Bank account details a few days ago, asking his fans to donate at least, one million each, for his birthday, the social media caught a raging fire with reports that his friends and fans were struggling to outdo themselves in the bid to be counted as being there for him.
In no time at all, the volume of donation became really so fluid to follow that the figures were difficult to follow. From about N10m within the first few minutes, the figure leaofrogged to over a N100m in just a few hours, prompting an ecstatic Wema Bank management to dispatch a number of its top officials to meet the music star in Dubai for small talks over some iced bottle of wines. Yet, a little more than 24 hours later, the account had swollen up to, wait for it, a princely N200m.
Those who didn’t bother to ask for his reasons before dropping from their deep purses include, oil mugol now banking whiz, Femi Otedola, Entertainment connoisseurs, Obi Cuban and Don Jazzy, whose individual donations ran several figures well above the minimum N1m benchmark.
Before, during and while the donation binge raged, many were left askance, wondering whether and guessing about what the heck the fun-loving, baby-bagging young man want to do with the largesse-frittered on frivolities or dispatched responsibly. No one was given any breathing space, not long enough anyway before he gave the answer. It was a stunning revelation of the very humane side of him.
In a move that left practical everyone catching the breath, His Majesty, Omo N’Oba, Oko Chioma, dropped a mouth opener as he announced that he would be handing over the entire N200m gifted to him, sealed and signed, to some selected orparnages. To add verve to the decision, he immediately announced a five-man committee to oversee the disbursement.
But wait a minute. He also placed an icing on the announcement, declaring that he would add an extra N50m of his personal money, making it N250m in all, to be handed over, ex Gratias, to the lucky orphanages. Did I hear you say…”how lucky people can e these hard times”?
Nigerians and his other fans, worldwide, have since been overwhelmed by his uncommon gift. For many, it is a proof of how rich in mind he is. And encomiums have been pouring in for him in torrents.
Inspirational gospel crooner, Yinka Ayefeke, his uncle, a media mogul extraordinary and opinion builder, Dele Momodu, Obi Cubana, et al, are among the first of the growing number of prominent Nigerians who could not hide their respect and admiration for a young man with a heart so rich.
“Davido donates 250m to orphanages! You see what we are talking about? A king will always be a king!
“We all rise by lifting others! It’s not about how much we have but having the mind to help when and where we can! Together, we can all make the world a better place! Thank you King David for impacting the world positively. Thank you!” he wrote in one of his socials.
“Well done King David; a phenomenal influence well utilized,” he coined his message proudly.
“This is why I love this young man, @davido, he stands out. The wisdom of God will never depart from you my dear brother,” Yinka Ayefele wrote.
“Blood is thicker than water. Davido, my own man of the year. My cousin to the world. Queen lateefah’s lineage. I hate to boast about fam but it is what it is. Love and light.” Nollywood actress, Wumi Toriola, wrote.
