NDLEA Intercepts 2,060kg Heroin, Others at Lagos airport, Ondo, Edo, Kano

*Picks Up Another Fake soldier with Drugs, Woman who Attempted to Smuggle Skunk Hidden in Wraps of Akpu into Agencys Cell for Suspect in Custody

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, intercepted over 2,060 kilograms of assorted drugs including heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis, tramadol and rohypnol. The seizures were made in operations covering the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, several courier companies and states, including Edo, Kaduna, Kano, Ondo and Plateau.

On October 6 and 15 respectively, the operatives intercepted two consignments of heroin, weighing 4.40kg and 550grams at the cargo shed of the MMIA, Ikeja. The first was seized at the SAHCO import shed of the airport, loaded inside bags of granulated sugar and flour which came into the country in an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Johannesburg, South Africa to Lagos via Addis Ababa.
Two suspects, Chukwuemeka Ugochukwu, a freight agent that cleared the consignment and one Kabiru Aminu, a stock keeper assigned to collect the cargo for onward distribution to recipients were arrested for further investigation.

In a follow up operation on October 9, one Adeoya Segun Joy, directed to collect the luggage from Kabiru Aminu, was arrested at Ajao estate while Enahoro Emmanuel Annointing, assigned to collect the consignment was nabbed in Abule-Egba area of Lagos. Both were acting on instructions from their partners in South Africa.

The second consignment was discovered at the SAHCO export shed, concealed in walls of 10 cartons laced with tailoring materials. It was heading to Malaysia via Addis Ababa on an Ethiopian cargo airline. A freight forwarding agent, Ekpe Samson Victor, was arrested in connection with the illegal export.

Attempts by another freight agent, Igwe Okoye Onwukwe to export two consignments of cannabis to the United Kingdom were foiled by NDLEA operatives. In the first attempt on October 15, he presented a carton of 16.55kg cannabis for export to UK at the NAHCO Export Shed but was promptly uh o arrested.

Curiously however, another cannabis consignment, weighing 15.85kg, also heading to the UK, was intercepted on 20th October. Subsequent investigations also traced the illicit luggage to Onwukwe who was still in custody, undergoing investigation in custody over the first interception.

On Friday October 22, NDLEA agents picked up two persons, Uchenna Obodo Ali, 22, and Tochukwu Eno, 20, in Ondo state. They were arrested with 302kg of cannabis in a raid at their warehouse deep inside Emure forest, Owo council area of the state.

Nacortic agents from NDLEA’s Kano command, arrested one Mohammed Haruna, 45 year-old driver, with 10,161 sachets of Tramadol and Rohypnol tablets and capsules. He was conveying the illicit drugs in a bus for distribution.
Operatives of the Kaduna command also successfully arrested another suspected fake soldier, Abiodun Ademola. Ademola, who hails from Akure south, Ondo state, was arrested in Zaria with 11.6kg of cannabis.

It was another successful operation for the NDLEA in Plateau state. Its command structure intercepted a Yola bound mass transit bus, along Jos-Abuja Road, within Riyom LGA. The bus with registration number FKY 341 ZA, belonging to Gombe Express, was on transit from Lagos, with one Ahmad Musa Musa, 32, among the passengers. He was found in possession of 22 pellets of compressed Cannabis Sativa, concealed inside a black bag, with a total weight of 15kg.

In one of the most audacious move however, 35-year-old Mariam Drissu, a nursing mother, was arrested at the headquarters of the Edo state NDLEA Command on Thursday, October 21. Mrs Drissu, was arrested while trying to smuggle drugs into the cell for a suspect in custody. Operatives on duty found two cups of “Loud” cannabis while searching the food she brought for her relation in custody. The items weighed 13grams, were buried inside the food (akpu) meant for the suspect in custody.

In another daring operation still in Edo state in Thursday, operatives of the agency raided a Cannabis farm, measuring 3.210691 hectares, in Ayegunle forest, Akoko Edo council area of the state. In the operation, the agents destroyed the plantation and evacuated 100 bags of harvested cannabis weighing 1,639kg. They also picked up a suspect, Samuel Ochonogor, in the forest, with 66.7kg of cannabis.

NDLEA operatives from the Directorate of Operation and General Investigations, DOGI, made successful interception while investigating some courier companies in Lagos. In one instance, they intercepted over 4.5kg of Methamphetamine, concealed in palm fruit tins, artwork, bottles of cashew nuts, auto spare parts and picture frame billed for Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Qatar.
