Our Plan for College of Health Sciences-Prof Akinwunmi

Professor Olayemi Durotimi Akinwunmi, is a quentessential academics of many parts. A distinguished international scholar and Professor of History, he has set his eyes on making a big difference in his current position as the Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, North Central Nigeria.

The FULokoja, as it is fondly called, was established on 16, February 2011, by the Federal Government of Nigeria during the civilian administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, to meet Nigeria’s insatiable appetite for more public Universities.

In less than one year since assuming office as the Vice Chancellor, following his appointment by the Federal Government of Nigeria, he has begun to leave imprints on the sands of time.
For example, the multiple award winner, says he is focused on making his University’s College of Health Scences, (COHS), the pride of all and one of the global best.
He also says existing faculties and courses, including Faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science, Education, among others, would be given the desired attention to make them more competitive.
The former Professor of History at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nasarawa State, North Central Nigeria, no doubt, has the magic wands to accomplish his vision going by the template he is putting on the ground and his vast academic and administrative background.
A family man with outstanding humane character, Akinwunmi, who took over from the former Vice Chancellor, Professor Angella Miri, is a man in a hurry to achieve greatness for his institution.
In this Online Interview with GANIYU OBAARO, he bares his mind on his laudable ongoing effort to establish the University’s COHS. Excerpts

Establishment of College of Health Sciences
The Steering Committee, composed of a group of medical expetts, had submitted the proposals for the establishment of College of Health Sciences (COHS).
This proposal was approved by the various organs of the University, including the Governing Council.


The structures and offices of the COHS are being established to take over the structures at the Adankolo Campus.
Also, restructuring of the (existing) buildings are being done to conform with the establishment of the Departments of the Basic Medical Sciences.


Medical teachers are being poached from similar institutions; and hopefully, accreditations by the regulatory bodies; National University’s Commission, NUC, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, shall be done soon.
