Details have emerged on how Dr Chike Akunyili, husband of one time Director-General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration, NAFDAC, Prof Dora Nkem Akunyili, was killed on Tuesday afternoon at Eke-Nkpor Uno area of Idemili council area of Anambra state.
Dr Akunyili, 2n-network learnt, was was returning from an event at the Sharon Hall of the All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha, organized by the University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association UNAA, Onitsha branch, in honour of his late wife when the incident happened. He was said to be traveling on a convoy when he ran into the unknown gunmen dressed in black T-shirt atop jeans trousers with fresh palm fronds strewn over their heads and bodies.
This medium also learnt that the gunmen, who were armed with guns and machetes, chanting, “No Election in Biafra land,” arrived Nkpor-Ideani-Nnobi Highway which they subsequently took over at about the same time workers and traders were heading home after the day’s business. They were reported to have attacked a group of persons suspected to be security personnel, killing them instantly before laying ambush.
Dr Akunyili later drove into the scene in a convoy and was reportedly pulled out of his car before the hoodlums slashed his head with a machete which opened a deep and wide gash on the right part of his face.
Another victim is said to have driven to the spot on a motorbike, onward Nkpor Junction and answering a call. Perhaps convinced he was reporting ongoing in the area, the hoodlums reigned bullets on him. Unlike Dr Akunyili who rolled helplessly on the ground without being taken to the hospital, the bike rider died instantly.
2n-network also learnt from eye witnesses that the assailants urged commuters to “maintain their move and cool” as they were not there for anyone but for certain persons.
“They just chose their targets and either use cutlass or gun, sharply and fast, wasting not more than twenty minutes before zooming off,” one of them said.
Initial reports had it that the assailants are members of Eastern Security Network, ESN, the armed branch of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. However, the group has refuted the claim, which it described as political killing, vowing to unearth those behind the killing.
“We the great family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukkwu Kanu, wish to dissociate ourselves from the senseless killing of innocent citizens in Anambra State. We have no hands in the political killings going on. We have severally raised the alarm that some cruel politicians are hiding under the cloak of the situation in Biafra land to eliminate their political enemies and blame it on IPOB.
The group added that it had never issued any official statement on whether or not there would be any election in Anambra state.
“We also wish to clarify that IPOB has never issued any official statement that there would be no governorship election in Anambra State,” the statement said.
