After 18 years of romance that yielded a mutually handsome reward, La Liga giant, FC Barcelona and its mercurial player, Lionel Messi, it is certain that the duo decided to part ways after all. According to information gleaned from the club’s website, the Argentine captain, who almost called it quits last summer after submitting a transfer request, is singing the Hasta la Vista swan song.
The decision to part ways became necessary amidst alleged uncertainties over the outcome of his wages slashed by half under the new five year deal. Though Messi has, since July 1, been a free agent, it is now certain that he will leave the club after the latter failed to fulfill the new contract initially agreed with him due to what is described as “financial and structural obstacles”.
“As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.
FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life,” Barcelona said in a statement.
It was generally believed that a compromise has been reached over the possibility of an extension particularly as there is an agreement on a pay cut. Indeed, he was willing to accept a pay cut of about €50m but all that changed in the last few days.
Since he joined Barca in 2003 through the club’s academy, Messi made 778 appearances out of which he netted 672 goals.
