Nigeria’s Police Inspector-General, Usman Alkali Baba, says he has recommended the immediate suspension of DCP Abba Kyari. The recommendation statement is contained in a letter he transmitted to the Police Service Commission, PSC, on Saturday.
According the IGP, the recommendation became imperative following the need to ensure an unimpeded ongoing internal investigations over Kyari’s alleged involvement in Hushpuppi’s internet fraud case in which he has been fingered as an accomplish.
Kyari was Indicted by a US court last week citing confessional statements made by Hushpuppi in which he allegedly gave part of the $1.1m internet fraud funds to the Kyari, one of the country’s topmost investigative police officers, an allegation Kyari has since denied.
Despite Kyari’s denial, the IGP, through his letter to the Police Service Commission, PSC, recommended his suspension in order to, as the letter puts it, “…create an enabling environment for the NPF Special Investigation Panel to carry out its investigations…” in line with internal disciplinary processes of the force.
…the suspension is also expected to create an enabling environment for the NPF Special Investigation Panel to carry out its investigations into the weighty allegations against DCP Abba Kyari without interference.
The suspension is without prejudice to the constitutional presumption of innocence in favour of the officer,” the IGP’s letter stated in part.
Meanwhile, a 4-man investigative panel, set up by the IGP, to unravel issues surrounding the fraud allegation against Kyari, as contained by an indictment statement by a US court, has begun its probe. Among others, the panel is mandated to carry out a detailed and thorough review of documents sent to the Nigeria Police Force by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI.
“The Special Investigation Panel, SIP, comprising four (4) Senior Police Officers, is headed by DIG Joseph Egbunike, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department, FCID. The SIP, inter alia, is to undertake a detailed review of all the allegations against DCP Abba Kyari by the US Government as contained in relevant documents that have been availed the NPF by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI.
The SIP is also to obtain a detailed representation of DCP Abba Kyari to all the allegations levelled against him, conduct further investigations as it deems fit, and submit recommendations to guide further actions by the Force Leadership on the matter,” The letter stated.
