*As They Adopt D’Tigers, D’Tigress Ahead Tokyo 2020
*N100m to the Rescue
By Ernest Omoarelojie
Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, is full of plaudits for three Nigerian banks for taking up the responsibility of adopting the country’s men and women basketball teams, D’Tigress and D’Tigress. Both teams have become the latest of the country’s 2020 Olympic bound group to benefit from the adoption policy of the federal ministry of Youth and Sports. The two teams became richer by $200,000 or N100m on Wednesday with the combined donation by the financial institutions, Access, GT and Zenith, for the prosecution of the game.
Each of the teams received N50m or $100,000 as support funds for the prosecution of the game.
While receiving the funds on behalf of the team, the minister assured that there is still room for other corporate organizations to adopt Olympic-bound athletes and or teams, emphasizing that the financial support made available by the three banks has further brightened Nigeria’s chances at clinching medals in the global multi-sports meet.
According to the Minister, the action of Access, GT and Zenith banks is a timely response to the appeal by the Ministry for corporate organizations to adopt the national teams. He singled out the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for encomiums, for spearheading the process that culminated in the adoption the same way he, Emefiele, equally played a key role in the revitalization of the Principals Cup, a football tournament for secondary schools across Nigeria.
In particular, the ministry poured praises on heads of the three banks-Herbert Wigwe, Segun Agbaje, Ebenezer Onyeagwu and their financial institutions for adopting the national basketball teams.
