In line with its promise to rein in the excesses of kidnappers and other criminals gangs, the Edo State Police command neutralized four dare devil kidnappers. The incident took place in Benin City on Tuesday following an attempt by the criminals to abduct an expatriate at the Presco Oil Company, along the Benin Sapele Road.
According to sources, luck ran out of the kidnappers following a tip-off upon which operatives of the Inspector General of Police Response Team, IRT, and the state command’s Anti Kidnapping and Cybercrime Unit intercepted the suspects at the Benin Bypass following which a gun battle ensued, leading to the death of the four, identified as Osaosemwen Osifo, David Ogba, Efosa Friday and Nelson Uchiko.
The four were earlier arrested for alleged kidnapping in 2015 charged to court and subsequently remanded in Oko Correctional facility, Benin City from which they later abscounded.
Until he met his waterloo, the alleged gang leader, Osaosemwen Osifo, popularly called “K2”, allegedly engaged in various armed robbery operations in Benin City and environs.
The kidnapping gang members are alleged to have masterminded the abduction of prominent individuals in the state capital and environs, including Engr Ogbeide Nosakhare, Professor Raymond Ozolua, Professor Isa, the managing director of Okon’s Furniture, Mr Okon’s.
But luck ran out on them on Tuesday as they attempted to kidnap an expatriate worker with Presco Oil Company.
“I was in prison when they suddenly opened the gate last year, and we all escaped with my friends now. We then formed another gang to kidnap and raise money to travel out of Nigeria. I ran to Abuja and came back to Benin City for this kidnapping of the man working in Presco company Ltd. I was shocked how the police got to know about our plan. Now, I have been hit. I regret this kidnapping.” Osaosemwen Osifo said before passing on.
The Police team recovered a Golf car from the gang. It was allegedly snatched by the hoodlums who subsequently removed the registration number before proceeding on the kidnap operation. Other items recovered include two AK 47 assault rifles and several mobile phones.
