Again, Emirates Airlines Suspends Direct Dubai/Lagos/Abuja Flights

By Our Aviation Correspondent

Barely 48 hours after announcing its intention to resume direct flights between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirate from both the Lagos and Abuja International Airports, Emirate Airlines has once again, suspended same. In a manner that has the trappings of high brow drama, United Arab Emirate announced on Sunday that it will not from Lagos and Abuja as from Sunday, June 21.
Emirate Airlines explained in a statement that it will not accept travellers to and from Lagos and Abuja, adding that those who have been to or connected through Nigeria in the last 14 days will also not be permitted to board from any other point to the UAE.
“We regret the inconvenience caused, and affected customers should contact their booking agent or Emirates call centre for rebooking. Emirates remains committed to Nigeria, and we look forward to resuming passenger services when conditions allow.”
The airline’s statement also indicates that its suspension on flights from both India and South Africa remain in place until July in line with government’s directives restricting travellers from the two countries into UAE. However, the directive does not affect daily flights to South Africa as according to the statement, “Daily passenger flights to Johannesburg will operate as EK-763, but outbound passenger services on EK-764 remain suspended…” But as it is the case with Nigeria, travellers “…who have been to or connected through South Africa in the last 14 days will not be permitted on any Emirates flights bound for Dubai.”
It would be recalled that Emirate Airline announced on Saturday that it would be resuming flight operations in Nigeria from June 23, 2021. In an Instagram release to that effect, the airline announced that the move is part of efforts to ease “…inbound travel restrictions…” which Dubai’s Supreme Court Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management introduced as new entry protocols for passengers, effective from June 23, 2021.
