It’s Gold For Odunayo Adekuoroye

Nigeria’s matswoman, Odunayo Adekuoroye, made a podium statement on Friday, as she grabbed the gold medal in her 57kg weight category in the ongoing World Wrestling Championship in Poland. The two time Commonwealth gold medalist out-grappled some o the game’s biggest names to emerge winner, beating Belarusian Iryna Kurachkina, who had to withdraw from the bout due to injury.
Adekuoroye, flaunting her Commonwealth and six African titles, brushed aside a number of the best wrestlers, including Helen Maroulis, 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist, whom she overpowered and dismissed via a 13-0 point haul in the quarter final.
Next came Rio 2016 silver medalist, the Russian slippery, whom the Nigerian cat flipped in the semi final before the encounter with the Belarusian Kurachkina.

Adekuoroye’s triumphant showing in the 57kg category has kindled Nigeria’s hope for a medal at the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics which tees off later this year. Besides Adekuoroye’s feat, one of the country’s flag bearers at the event, Blessing Oborodudu, settled for silver in the 68kg freestyle having lost to Koumba Larroque of France.
