Undergrads On Rampage In Calabar Over Colleague’s Murder

Students of the Cross River State University, Calabar, went on the rampage on Friday following the murder of one of their colleagues who was reportedly stabbed to death by phone thieves. The late student, identified as Ford Nkasi, a final year undergraduate of the department of Visual Arts, is said to have met his death while attempting to rescue a female colleague who was being robbed of her smart phone. Nkasi allegedly confronted the robbers in an attempt to retrieve the stolen phone but was stabbed severally by the hoodlums as a result of which he bled to death.
The attack is reported to have taken place at about 9pm, on Thursday, not far from the institution’s administrative building, a few meters from the security post. Sadly, attempts by other students to quickly rush the victim to a nearby hospital was said to have been delayed by security officials who refused to allow the use of a vehicle belonging to the school which was stationed at the security post. More than the stabbing, protesting students allege that the delay led to Nkasi’s death.
Some of the suspects in the murder are said to be in the custody of the school’s security guards. The protesting students want the suspects released to them
“All we want is to let the school security release the suspects they have arrested to us. They said the suspects have been handed over to the police but with our experiences, crimes happened like this in the school and suspects would be arrested and reported to be handed over to the police but nothing would be heard about it. That is our anger. Since the school cannot protect us, we will protect ourselves,” one of the protesting volunteered
Meanwhile, state police Commissioner, Sikiru Akande, confirmed the incident while also alleging that some students protested and wanted to burn down the university’s administrative building following their colleague’s brutal death.
Akande also alleged that the protest was spearheaded by cultists some of whom he said, have been arrested by the police.
“some of the cultists have been arrested, still some idiots gathered themselves under the guise of protesting against the death of a student; they wanted to burn the university administrative building. Who will be at a loss?” Akande queried, warning that “any attempt by any group of persons, under any guise, to disturb the peace we have in Cross River State will be matched with the required force.’’
