Railway Line Vandalism: Governor’s Aide, Chinese National, Benin City based Lawyer, Security Personnel Nabbed

Nasarawa state police commissioner, Bola Longe, announced on Thursday that the special adviser to the state governor on infrastructure, Yusuf Musa, is among those arrested for the vandalizatiin of railway tracks. Alonge made the announcement while parading the suspect along with other members of his gang at the state police command, in Lafia. 

Also paraded with Musa are officers of both the Nigerian police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, Thai, a Chinese national who is the manager of Yong Xing Steel Company, SamuelShagbaor, a staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and principal technical officer covering AgyaraguLafia and surburbs, Mohammed Isiaka, a former Supervisory

Others include Thai, a Chinese national who is the manager of Yong Xing Steel Company and the company’s legal adviser, Nathaniel Oba, principal partner, Nathoba & Co, a Benin City based lawchamber. 

Alonge told newsmen that the police made additional arrests while conducting further investigation. Those picked up include Jacob Terlumun Emmanuel, procurement officer of the Chinese, Samuel Shagbaor, a staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and principal technical officer covering Agyaragu Lafia and surburbs, Mohammed Isiaka, a former Supervisory councillor on education, Nasarawa Egon LGA, Umaru Dauda, Yusuf Ahmed, Abubakar Nuhu and Mohammed Abdulahi. 

The Police Boss added that Richard Joseph, an inspector of police, Mali Peter, a sergeant, IbrahimUsman, an official of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps; and three others are the security personnel arrested at the scene of the crime.

The Police commissioner who disclosed that the arrests were facilitated through credible intelligence reports, noted that the alleged vandals turned the rail track traversing major towns and villages across Nasarawa state and en route Benue to gold mines. According to him, “…an extensive investigation intothe case led to the arrest of Mr Musa and ten others.”

“…on 16/5/2021 at about 0130hrs and 24/5/2021 at about 0300hrs respectively when police operatives swooped on the vandals at their theatre of operation while vandalising and carting away railway tracks/slippers along Agyaragu Tofa in Lafia LGA and Angwan Alago of Kadarko district in Keana LGA.”

Alonge who explained that Nathaniel Oba, Yong Xin’s legal adviser was nabbed for offering six hundred thousand (N600, 000) Naira cash to bribe the investigating team for the release of his client, added that another suspect, identified as Abubakar Nuhu, was picked up for offering one hundred and sixty thousand (N160, 000) Naira to secure the release of a trailer conveying the vandalised tracks. 

The Police commissioner noted that his team is possession of the said money, a Falker Mercedes Benz Truck with registration number LFA 636 ZX and a DAF trailer both loaded with vandalised rail tracks/slippers and two white J5 buses recovered from the suspects. In his words, 

“…preliminary investigation into these cases so far, have revealed that, it is a grand conspiracy involving high net worth individuals who act as sponsors and drivers of various syndicates which specialise in vandalising Nigerian railway tracks/slippers in different parts of Nasarawa State notably: Gudi-Lafia-Akeleku-Makurdi railway line. This is a classic case of sabotage being perpetrated by unpatriotic Nigerians including some personnel of security agencies who are employed by the Nigerian state to protect lives and property. This criminal circus is sustained and kept alive by companies who process steel/iron scraps and mostly owned by foreign nationals who make wrongful gains at the expense of the national interest.”
