Kano On a Rape Rage

Security reports from Kano city in Kano state, North West Nigeria, suggest that the ancient city may be under a rape rampage. According to Kano police Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abdullahi Haruna, who made the disclosure in an interview on Thursday, the state police command recorded 42 rape cases between January and May, 2020.
The PPRO disclosed that the number represents such incidences already investigated and charged to court. According to him, statistical analysis of the cases indicated that 33.3 per cent of the rape incidents were committed in uncompleted buildings and 17.7 per cent at farmlands, adding that 15.6% occurred in shops, another 15.6% at suspecys’ residences while the other 6.7 and 2.2 per cents took place at the victims’ residences and marketplaces respectively.
But the development, Haruna noted, represents a drastic drop in incidence of rape compare to the number recorded within the same period the previous year.
The PPRO who called on residents of the state to report molestation and other forms of gender abuses to the police, reemphasized that the commitment of the command is battle ready to address the menace.
“Keeping quiet without reporting rape cases will encourage the criminals to keep abusing you. Our doors are open for advice. In this era of community policing, the Command incorporates community problem-solving approach in handling issues in the state,” he said.
